The Search for the Oldest Cemetery and More

What was Wyandotte's first cemetery? Mount Carmel Cemetery or the Historical Oakwood Cemetery?

Mount Carmel Cemetery was established in 1865. The (Clark) Oakwood Cemetery was first operational in 1869 and is now considered an historic site.

But Mount Carmel was not the oldest cemetery in Wyandotte! There was another cemetery that existed ten years before Mount Carmel. The search for it was very controversial for years. Finally Mike McCloy investigated its existence and recorded evidence of it in "The Search for Wyandotte's Oldest Cemetery". It was known as the "Old City Cemetery".

The Mount Carmel and Oakwood cemeteries in Wyandotte represent decades, centuries of historical events and people. See a glimpse of that history in the photos below.
